Native to Southeast Asia, the Fatsia Japonica can be grown both outside and as a houseplant. It’s a very popular plant due to its attractive foliage and few care needs – even Alan Titchmarsh, is said to be a fan. It can produce small, white flowers in the autumn and these are usually followed by black fruits.

This plant has eight leaf lobes, which is where it gets its name 'fatsia' from, the Japanese word meaning 'eight'.

The Fatsia Japonica is pretty low maintenance with its care needs, it just needs some protection from the elements during the winter, so consider providing it with shelter. It also has a tendency to grow wide and can reach a spread of around 3-4 metres at maturity, so make sure you give it plenty of room. If you have pets, you'll be pleased to know this plant is non-toxic.

Plant care

Your plant's pot should have holes in the bottom so it is able to drain water easily.

If reusing a pot that had other plants in it, it is recommended you wash the pot, killing any mould or bacteria.

Do not over water your plant as the roots will rot.

Most plants need to be kept by a good source of natural light.

You should fertilise your plant every two months. You can use all purpose fertiliser.

Any dead or fallen leaves should be removed to prevent bacteria and mould. Dead branches should also be removed.
